You’ve probably heard the saying: “Measure twice, cut once.” It’s great advice, especially when it comes to ordering uniforms online. Nobody enjoys sending back a uniform top that’s either too tight, too long, or just plain wrong.
Still, we get it. The idea of grabbing a measuring tape and twisting around in front of a mirror? Not exactly high on anyone’s list of fun activities.
But here's the thing: taking your own body measurements is the best way to ensure your work uniform fits properly, the first time. And lucky for you, it’s way easier than you think.
As uniform sizing experts, we’ve broken it down into four simple steps. Whether you're measuring for healthcare scrubs, polos, or corporate wear, here’s how to measure yourself for uniforms like a pro.

Step 1: Wear the Right Clothing (or None at All)
To get the most accurate fit, measure as close to your natural shape as possible.
Best option: Measure in your underwear or lightweight fitted clothing.
Avoid: Bulky hoodies, shapewear, or jeans, they distort your measurements.
No need to go full birthday suit (unless you want to), but the closer you get to your true silhouette, the better your results will be.
Step 2: Know What Measurements You Actually Need
Forget the textbook anatomy, these are the key body measurements you'll need when shopping for uniforms online:
-
Bust/Chest: Stand up straight, breathe normally, and wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of your chest or bust, ensuring the tape is level all the way around. For best results, keep your arms down by your sides.
-
Waist: Your natural waist is not where your jeans sit, it's the smallest part of your torso, usually just above your belly button. Exhale normally and wrap the tape around this area, keeping it snug but not tight.
- Hips: Stand with your feet together and measure around the widest part of your hips. This is usually around your hip bone area, but it can vary depending on your body shape. Again, keep the tape level and make sure it isn’t too tight.
Pro tip: Always measure on bare skin for accuracy, and use a mirror or ask someone to help if possible.
Step 3: Use the Right Tools & Technique
Time to put that measuring tape to work. Don’t have a tailor’s tape? Use a paper tape (like the ones from IKEA), or a string or ribbon, then measure it with a ruler.
While measuring:
Stand naturally and breathe normally
Keep the tape snug but not stretched
Try sitting and bending to make sure your uniform won’t feel tight when moving
Prefer a looser fit? Add one or two finger widths under the tape for a relaxed result.
Step 4: Compare with the Uniform Size Chart
Now that you’ve got your measurements, it’s time to match them to your supplier’s uniform size guide.
But if you fall between two sizes? Go with the larger size for comfort or reach out to our Customer Care Team (we’re pros at helping customers find their perfect fit).
Remember: size charts can vary between brands, so always use the one provided by your uniform supplier.
Why Accurate Measurements Matter for Workwear
Wearing the right size uniform isn’t just about comfort, it can boost your confidence, reduce distractions, and help you look more professional at work. Ill-fitting uniforms can cause:
- Unnecessary returns
- Low morale or discomfort
- Embarrassment on the job
Taking 5 minutes to measure now = fewer hassles and better workdays later.
Et voilà! Everything you need to ensure your next online clothing purchase fits you like a glove.
So, the next time you’re tempted to ditch the tape and order your ‘regular size’, remember just how easy it is to pick the right size the first time.
